Þis verb has deteriorated ſomewhat over þe centuries, and þē infinitive, gerund, and participles have vaniſht from our language along wiþ þē imperative tenſe. Þey may be tranſlated as “to be goïng to,” “to be obligated to," or “ought” depending on context.

An intereſting development in þis verb has occurd in þe ſouþern United States and poſsibly oþer areas: Þe word “could” is beïng ūſd to expreſs þē infinitive of þis verb in ſome contexts (i.e. “maybe i ought to” = “i might ſhould.”) Þough grammaticians probably cringe at þe ſound of it, much as þey muſt at my revīſd orþography, it is actually more true to þe original verb and much leſs wordy. Þis is alſo done wiþ þe verbs “could” and “would.”
