Auþor’s Note: Þē orþography of þē angloſaxon language was never firmly eſtabliſht, and even when ſet rules were made, þey were not followd excluſively. Þe following guidelines for angloſaxon orþography will be attempted to be obſervd on þis webſite as a matter of conſiſtancy.

  • I will not differentiate between þe phœnetic qualities of þe letters c and . If at a future time i am inclīnd to do ſo, þe ſoft ſounds of þeſe characters will be indicated by a raiſd dot (ċ and ).
  • Beïng þat þe letter(s) S is probably þe leaſt conſiſtant of þē angloſaxon letters, þe following, ſomewhat arbitrary, rules (alþough ſimilar to þe S-rules of my propōſd reformation of modern engliſh orþography) ſhall be eſtabliſht:
    • S in þē initial poſition ſhall be repreſented by the long or high S (ſ).
    • S in þē initial poſition of þe non-initial part of a compound word ſhall be repreſented by high S (ſ).
    • S in þe final poſition of þe non-final part of a compound word ſhall be repreſented by short S (s).
    • S in medial poſition followd by any vowel ſhall be repreſented by the insular or low S ().
    • S in medial poſition followd by any conſonant ſall be repreſented by the high S (ſτ, ſh).
    • A double-S in medial poſition ſhall be repreſented by the high S (ſſ).
    • S in the final poſition ſhall be repreſented by the round or short S (s).
    • A double-S in final poſition ſhall be repreſented by a high ſ followd by a short S (ſs).
  • Acute accent marks ſhall indicate long vowels, raþer þan macrons.
